CosaminDS is a nutritional supplement which aids the recovery of flexibility of impaired joints such as knees, hips, fingers, shoulders, neck and lower back. This unique patented formula contains high grade glucosamine HCl (500mg), chondroitin sulphate (400mg) and manganese gluconate 45.5mg. When given together in these correct proportions the ingredients work synergistically to support the structure and function of articular cartilage which is the resilient slippery tissue that covers the ends of the bones in joints. It lubricates the bone surface and acts like a 'shock absorber'.Articular cartilage consists of relatively few cells surrounded by a material called the matrix. The small number of cartilage cells normally maintain the balance between essential proteins and carbohydrates in the matrix but this balance may be upset by daily wear and tear, chronic overuse, trauma, obesity or the ageing process. An imbalance occurs in the matrix due to a decrease in the production combined with an increase in the destruction of essential proteins and carbohydrates. This in turn leads to the inability of the cartilage to lubricate the joint or absorb shock as it did before.CosaminDS assists the repair of the damage or eroded cartilage by stimulating the cartilage cells and it helps to block the action of destructive enzymes in the joint. Taking the active ingredients glucosamine HCl and chondroitin sulphate together is better than taking either alone as they have different but complementary actions. Glucosamine stimulates the cartilage and chondroitin decreases cartilage breakdown.Dosage and AdministrationDuring the initial 60 day period: Adults weighing under 90kg should take three (3) capsules daily (2 in the morning and 1 in the evening). Individuals weighing over 90kg should take two (2) capsules twice a day. For children, consult your physician or pharmacist. After 60 days:The number of capsules can be gradually decreased to a level that maintains the individual. The number of capsules may be increased at any time. For individuals who have difficulty swallowing, capsules may be pulled apart and mixed with food or dissolved in juice or other liquid.Contraindications and PrecautionsThere are no known contraindications for CosaminDS. However, persons taking anticoagulant therapy are advised to have clotting times regularly checked when taking CosaminDS. Diabetics are advised to monitor blood glucose levels regularly when taking CosaminDS. No studies have evaluated the use of CosaminDS during pregnancy or lactation. It should be taken with caution and medical advice during pregnancy and lactation.Adverse ReactionsSafety studies with CosaminDS show no demonstrable toxicity. Some individuals may experience mild, reversible, intestinal flatulence, especially at initial dose rates. This can usually be alleviated by taking CosaminDS with meals followed by a glass of water.
